“Reclaiming Our Roots: Our Heritage, Our Environment, Our People”.
That is the theme of this year’s History and Heritage Week of Activities, to take place from 15 to 21 February (although some events will take place before and after). This annual programme of activities, held during the third week in February, seeks to promote wider understanding and deeper appreciation among citizens, of the diverse cultural heritage of our country. The Brimstone Hill Fortress National Park Society initiated implementation of this idea some four years ago.
Other partners include the Nevis Historical and Conservation Society, the St. Christopher Heritage Society, the Department of Culture in St. Kitts, the CFB College History and Heritage Club, the St. Kitts Archives, the Department of Education in St. Kitts, and some teachers.
The Rotary Club of Liamuiga and Leyton Microcomputers help sponsor the Primary Schools Quiz – a major feature every year. The SKNA National Bank will once again provide overall sponsorship this year as it has for the past two years.
The Week commenced last year for the first time with an Ecumenical Service. This year, the St. Kitts Christian Council and Evangelical Association will again combine to host this important opening event. As in the past, the Week will be officially launched in St. Kitts by the Prime Minister or Deputy Prime Minister and in Nevis by the the Premier or Deputy Premier of Nevis, respectively.
Other activities each year include public lectures by a distinguished Caribbean scholar, radio interviews and commentaries, heritage hikes, panel discussions on television, food fairs, concerts, and others. Anyone can participate and community groups are particularly welcomed.

A full programme will be published in the local newspapers.
