Basseterre, St. Kitts, (SKNIS):
In spite of the current global economic situation, residents of St. Kitts were able to dig deep and donate US$41,000 via the Red Cross’ RBTT Haiti Contributions account.
According to Dr. Reginald O’Loughlin, President of the St. Kitts and Nevis Red Cross, the organization wired the funds to the International Federation of Red Cross for use in Haiti on Monday, February 15, 2010. He further noted that the RBTT account as at Monday, following the withdrawal, had a balance of EC$116,166.73.
Dr. O’Loughlin graciously thanked all who have already contributed to the people of Haiti in the aftermath of the January 12 Earthquake, via the RBTT account. He noted that the account is still open and encouraged persons to continue to give as additional wire transfers will be sent as the recovery effort in the Republic of Haiti continues. The RBTT account is 2604000000014247 (2604-seven 0s-14247).
In another disaster response effort, Dr. O’Loughlin informed that the St. Kitts and Nevis Red Cross will be donating $6,000 worth of Galva loom to assist with the renovations of the roof of a Sandy Point residence that caught fire on Saturday, February 13, resulting in the death of two children. As customary, Red Cross visited the scene following the disaster to assess the family’s needs.
As such, Red Cross contributions to the survivors have included five kitchen sets, five family kits, four tarpaulins, two mosquito nets and a bale of blankets. The Red Cross President said that the volunteers also collected information relating to the actual losses with the hope that further assistance would be forthcoming from members of the local community and the general public at large.
