It’s great being a woman and having all the choices with regards to beauty and fashion options. Recently in St. Kitts everyone seems to have the same make-over strategy in mind; and that is to change their hair colour. Here’s a tip or two:
Do your homework before you colour! You’ve kept that boring “brown” or black for too long and now you’re eager to try “fiery” red or the “blonde” undertones look! Before you plunge into changing your hair colour, check these helpful tips.- First rule: Hair colour is not paint – colour as we perceive it, is actually the reflection of light off the coloured pigments in the hair shaft. So when picking a colour check the degree of lightness or darkness of the colour that is reflected or seen by the eye. Hair colour is assigned a level number from 1 to 10, with 1 being black and 10 lightest blonde. In other words, black reflects very little light and lightest blonde reflects the greatest amount of light, e.g., a dark skinned person should not use blonde or reddish blonde undertones.
- Learn about different types of hair colour. Permanent hair colour does not wash out. Semi permanent is for those who want to try a new look but may not want to keep it; the lasting time varies. You can also select a rinse which can be washed out over time.
- Do the math for hair colouring. DON’T panic when I say reddish or blonde undertones, or orange hair! Remember that the colour you see is a combination of colours reflecting off the hair. You should use a swatch book or ring to compare your hair colour. You want to cancel out some of the red/orange undertones to prevent the dreaded “orange headed affliction”, but yet leave enough to keep the warm tones.
- Select the desired colour that you want. Now that you’ve determined where you want to be colour wise, you have to find out where you are now, with respect to the level and the tone of your hair, whether it has reddish undertones which are considered “warm” colours, or blonde or ashen undertones which are “cool” undertones.
- Always do a strand test! A strand test is the only reliable way to preview the new colour.
- Finally! Be sure that you select a colour that you can maintain easily and will fit your lifestyle and your pocketbook!
