Located in the centre of Basseterre, Glass Island Ltd., represents one of the most innovative artistic realities in the production of fused glass and a unique spot of this kind in the Caribbean.
The Egyptians, Romans and Aztecs made objects that were beautiful as well as functional by fusing glass. Glass fusing techniques were rediscovered during the second half of the last century and are still used today.
Glass Island uses glass fusing techniques to make beautiful glass art.
This modern technique allows us to build modular glass tiles that can be mounted in a metal/wooden frame to be part of a larger design. Suitable either for private homes or public places (hotels, restaurants, community buildings etc..) these personalised glass tiles are ideal for use in windows, doors, transoms, dividing panels, skylights, etc.
Fused glass panels are ideal for modern environments full of light. Designs are inspired by the natural beauty of the Caribbean sea and countryside and are made to client’s specifications. Jewellery, platters and many other decorative glass objects are created using the colours of the tropical palette.
The colours of the objects made using the fused glass technique do not fade with time. In the process of fusing a critical role is played by the raising and decreasing of temperature which has to take place following an accurate diagram.
Once fused flat, the tiles can be slumped in molds to obtain a three-dimensional shape, particularly effective in complementary furnishings, such as lamps or dishes.
As long as compatible, various kinds of glass can be fused together. In recent times we have seen an increase in the range of compatible glass, last of which the “dichroic” largely used in the realisation of our jewellery line “Black Magic” mounted on sterling silver findings made in Italy for us.
www.glassisland.com is our “virtual window”. Its scope is to display our products through the web.
