Get Back To Basics… Fashion Basics That Is!
Fashion 101 (Part 1)
Stuck on what to wear? Here’s how to choose the best clothes for your figure!
- Work Your Assets.
- Figure out what your best assets are. For me, it’s my legs; they are long and shapely, so I play them up with lots of dresses and skirts to show them off.
Curvy Shapes:

If you are very curvy, with ample hips, curvy thighs, small waist, long torso, and great legs:
- Wear dresses and skirts to show off your long legs;
- Dresses should be fitted from the bust to the waist and flare slightly at the hips to create an even shape between your lean upper body and curvy lower body;
- Wear A-line skirts made of solid heavy fabrics; cottons, twills or taffetas are excellent to disguise the curviest part of your body;
- Try longer tops that hit just above the thighs to show off your legs without covering you up;
- Straight leg pants streamline your thighs; try black, its so slimming!
Tall and Lean:
If you have a tall, lean body, with broad shoulders, a small waist, and narrow hips:
- Make your small waist and lean body the focus; slim form-fitting dresses that cling to your waist and hips and fall below the knee shows off curves nicely;
- All types of pants look good on your body type; try the seasons’ hottest high-waist, wide leg trouser, which accentuates a tiny waist and fill out and give shape to your frame.
- Three-quarter length skirts look good on you and paired with a layered, printed top with pleats/ruffle detail, help to create the illusion of curves; they work great to show off your broad shoulders.
- Mini skirts shows off your long legs. You owe it to yourself to have at least one ultra sexy, ultra comfortable piece in your wardrobe for those good days!
- Exotic jewellery, necklaces, circular pendants, chokers, etc looks excellent on you.
Petite Frames:

If you are short, with a short torso and short legs, but slim and curvy, here are some things you should keep in mind:
- Try skinny jeans in a short length that won’t overwhelm your petite frame;
- Fitted tops, blouses and tees hug your small frame without looking skimpy;
- A mini dress or mod dress works well to create and emphasise your legs, making them appear longer than they actual are;
- A fitted jacket with lots of zips and pockets won’t overwhelm your petite frame and draws eyes to the jacket.
Rounded Tummy:

If you are like most women, then your stomach is probably not your best feature; whether from child bearing or you’ve developed a muffin top from lots of low-rise jeans, here are some solutions for you:
- Try pants with a slightly higher waist to camouflage a muffin top or a poutty middle.
- Billowy tops with slim sleeves allow breathing room and draw attention to your shape.
- Dresses that are flowing and swing over your tummy area, works well and are fun to wear! Try baby doll dresses and the season’s hottest tent dresses.
- Opt for swing jackets that are big this season; just button up above your stomach so you won’t feel constricted. Try dark colours like navy, burgundy or brown for work and bright colours, prints or metallics for more flare in the evenings!
- Skirts can be a real jewel for hiding that tummy, if you go for skirts with decorative details, pleats, and ruffles which draw focus away from your middle.
And finally, if you are Curvy All Over:
Try these styles and look amazing everyday:
- Try dark boot cut jeans that create balance for your curves and upper body.
- A fitted layered V-neck top or tops with billowy sleeves and ruching at sides skims over curves and shows off just enough skin!
- Dresses with an A-line cut are comfy and don’t cling; just add a decorative belt to emphasize your waist.
- Pencil or skinny skirts have been the rage for a few seasons now, and is excellent for your figure; they show off your legs and gives you a slim silhouette.
- A belted or wrap jacket that falls just above the thighs, cinches the waist to create an hour-glass shape, lengthens your torso, and draws attention to your upper region. Try plaid or printed patterns that are fun, match with almost everything and draw attention away from wide thighs!
