Castries, Saint Lucia, April 26th, 2010 –
The Eastern Caribbean Telecommunications Authority (ECTEL) will host a public ceremony and regional symposium in Grenada on May 4th 2010, to mark the tenth anniversary of the signing of the Treaty which established the regulatory authority. This event follows the programme launch in Saint Lucia in February, and forms part of the year-long 10th anniversary celebrations.
The public ceremony will be held at the Flamboyant Hotel and Villas in Grand Anse, and will include statements by the Members of the ECTEL Council of Ministers on behalf of their respective governments. The Council Members are the Ministers responsible for Telecommunications and Information and Communications Technology (ICTs) in the Member States namely: Hon. Joseph Gilbert of Grenada who is the current Chairman of the Council, Hon. Ambrose George of Dominica, Hon. Glen Phillip of St. Kitts and Nevis, Hon. Guy Joseph of Saint Lucia, and Hon. Dr Jerrol Thompson of St. Vincent and the Grenadines.
The Prime Minister of Grenada, Hon. Tilman Thomas, will present the feature address and provide his perspectives on the contribution of ECTEL to the development of its Member States. He will also speak about the future role for the telecommunications authority in an era of dynamic changes in the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) sector.
A regional symposium will be convened immediately after the ceremony, which will assess the impact of the ECTEL and telecommunications liberalisation in the Eastern Caribbean. Presentations will be made by the staff of ECTEL Directorate and the National Telecommunications Regulatory Commissions (NTRCs) on the past, present and future of regulation. The main telecommunications providers in the region will also share their experiences of operation in the ECTEL jurisdiction in the past decade.
An awards ceremony is scheduled for the evening of May 4th, during which ECTEL will recognise the sterling contribution of Grenadian nationals to the establishment and operation of the regulatory authority. The Governor General, His Excellency Sir Carlyle Arnold Glean of Grenada will present the awards.
The Eastern Caribbean Telecommunications Authority regulates the telecommunications sector in the Member States of Dominica, Grenada, St. Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, and St. Vincent and the Grenadines. It includes a regional Directorate based in Saint Lucia, which provides regulatory guidance and advice to the National Telecommunications Regulatory Commissions (NTRCs) in each of the five Member States. The ECTEL Treaty was signed in Grenada on May 04th 2000.
