Taiwan Folk Sports Troupe Wows Audiences In St. Kitts

The Keelung Chung-Cheng Junior High School Folk Sports Troupe here to celebrate the centennial anniversary of the founding of their country staged two impressive performances in the Federation this week. On Monday 23rd May, they performed to an audience of specially invited guests at the Cecil Jacobs auditorium of the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank (ECCB). On Tuesday afternoon they performed for the general public and a host of school children at the Silver Jubilee Stadium.

The performers were all junior high school children from the Keelung Chung Cheng Junior High school who practice their arts, mainly drawn from traditional games and sports such as rope skipping, diabolo juggling, top spinning, as part of their free time activities. Some of these sports are very familiar in the Federation of long ago.

Anticipation

The performance on Monday evening, in the presence of the Governor General Sir Cuthbert Monteville Sebastian GCMG, OBE, was co-sponsored by the Ministry of Culture and the Embassy of the Republic of China (Taiwan). Also in attendance was the Prime Minister Hon Dr Denzil Douglas and the resident Ambassador of the Republic of China (Taiwan) Mr. H.E Li-Jey Tsao and Mrs Tsao. The evening was a blend of the culture of both countries – The Federation was represented by the St. Christopher Choral Society, a steel pan presentation by Steven Richards and a compliment of the Jason St. Ann’s Stinging Ants Troupe of clowns.

Other dignitaries present at the performance were the Deputy Governor General Mr. Eustace John and Mrs. John, the Deputy Prime Minister Hon Sam Condor and Mrs. Condor other ministers of government, including the Minister with responsibility for culture Hon Marcella Liburd, senior government officials and members of the diplomatic corps.

In his brief address Mr. H.E Li-Jey Tsao the Taiwanese Ambassador revealed that St. Kitts is the only country where the performance by this troupe has been staged outside of Taiwan for the centennial celebrations.
