ECCB Hosts 40th Annual Monetary Studies Conference

The Eastern Caribbean Central Bank (ECCB) will host the 40th Annual Monetary Studies Conference over the period 11 to 14 November 2008.  The annual conference is a forum through which academics, policymakers, technocrats and representatives from non-governmental organisations discuss the economic challenges and options facing the Caribbean.

This year's conference, which will be in memory of Sir Arthur Lewis, will also commemorate the 60th anniversary of the University of the West Indies.  Accordingly, the theme is "Economic Transformation in a Post-Independent Caribbean: What can we learn from Sir Arthur Lewis?"   A total of 43 papers will be presented under the following sub–themes:

1.                  Banking, Finance and Regulation

2.                  Economic Growth Dynamics in the Caribbean

3.                  Regional Integration

4.                  Foreign Exchange Market and Interest Rate Parity

5.                  Inflation and Economic Management

6.                  Globalisation, Trade and Sustainability of the External Account

7.                  Agricultural Development and Environmental Issues

8.                  Fiscal Challenges and Debt Management in Small Open Developing Countries

9.                  The Dynamics of Monetary Policy in the Caribbean

10.              Capital, Technology and Economic Transformation

11.              Socio Economic Challenges in the Caribbean

Over 80 participants are expected from regional universities, central banks and other government entities as well as from international universities and institutions.  

An open lecture, honouring the life of Dr Adlith Brown, will also form part of the conference’s agenda.  This year’s lecture will be delivered by Dr Vaughan Lewis, esteemed Caribbean scholar, nephew of the late Sir Arthur Lewis and former Prime Minster of Saint Lucia.
