October 16th marked the 80th anniversary of the founding of the St. Kitts Nevis Girls’ High School and past students at home, in Toronto and on the Seas (Cruising) celebrated the birthday in grand style.Although the School no longer exists, having merged with the Grammar School in 1967, to become the Basseterre High School, those who attended the Girls’ High School are still bonded by the strong culture and structure that existed at that school, which have shaped their lives in no uncertain terms.
Those at home celebrated by attending Service together on October 18th at The Weslyan Methodist Church and the majority of them continued the celebration by dining together at Manhattan Gardens at Lime Kiln after the Service. Another group boarded the ‘Adventure of the Seas’ in San Juan for an Anniversary Cruise around the Eastern Caribbean. On the School’s birthday, they held a mini-assembly, shared memorabilia they had brought and sat down to share experiences in a Session termed ‘Sweet Memories and Life Stories’. It was described as ‘soul-stirring’.
In Toronto, Past Students there also celebrated with a function. To mark this significant anniversary, a Souvenir Booklet was also produced. Past students can obtain a copy ($25.00) from Ellenitta Nathaniel, Patricia Hector or Lorna Callender. If in town, they can get their copies from Reliance Store (Spence Store) on Central Street. Those who shop at Valu Mart can obtain their copies from Dr, Nisbett’s Veterinary Clinic just beyond Horsford’s Hardware. It is a great gift for students at home and abroad who could not share in the celebrations.
As most past students are now middle aged or senior citizens, much of the discussions centered around comparisons between school life then and school life now. What was very clear to all was the very important role a school and teachers play in shaping the life of a student and those of their families. The well known saying “a teacher affects eternity” was confirmed again and again. More will be written about this at a later date.
